Are you in the middle of a job hunt that has hit a plateau? If you feel like the same opportunities are coming up and nothing is really catching your attention, the place you’re using to search for a job could be your problem.

The best way to do a job search is to give yourself a solid list of places you can search. However, if you’ve been stuck on LinkedIn or Craigslist (yikes), you may not know what other options there are for you.

Here are some great places to start and expand your job search.

1. Google It
If you are searching for a marketing manager job in a specific city, type in “Marketing Manager jobs Toronto” and you will find several different sources to search for available marketing manager positions in the city you are searching in. Often times job boards will pick up job postings from larger sites (LinkedIn) so by Googling a position you are looking for, you are broadening your search.

2. LinkedIn
LinkedIn is one of the most popular places for people to search for jobs. What’s great about this platform is that it will actually provide you a selection of opportunities that are relevant to you based on your current experience and previous searches. It can also alert you to people you are connected to who work at the company for the job posting so you can reach out to them for a reference or to contact them about the position.BONUS!

3. Industry-Specific Job Boards
There are TONS of job boards out there dedicated to specific industries. These boards are great for finding opportunities are various kinds for the industry you are interested in. These boards can be really successful at finding you exactly what  you’re looking for as they are very concentrated. If you don’t know any industry-specific job boards, you can do a Google search for “Canadian (industry type, i.e. Digital Marketing) job boards” and you will find a few that you can use.

4. Popular Job Boards
There are so many job boards (and no, we don’t mean Craigslist and Kijiji) that are really successful at showing you opportunities. As mentioned above, some of these boards will pull opportunities from other sites, so you can find plenty of opportunities in one spot. Large/popular job boards include, Indeed, Glassdoor, Workopolis and government job banks just to name a few. Don’t limit yourself to just one and search various positions that are closely related to what you are looking for, so you don’t miss any opportunities.

5. Social Media
Believe it or not, social media can alert you to some fantastic job opportunity. This search option is a bit slower but follow companies you really love and would love to work for, and when an opportunity comes up, they may post it on their social media.

Use a spreadsheet to keep track of the positions you have applied for through each platform. This will prevent you from applying to the same position twice and keep your job search on track.
